Since I’m on spring break, this is all I could do today

  • Rustom Ghazaleh, the former Head of Political Security, has been released from the hospital.
    • He was hospitalized in February the day after he was fired from his position, reportedly after he was either beaten or shot as an additional punishment for angering other powerful officials.

  • The UN expanded sanctions against Syria, freezing the assets and blocking entry to the EU of 7 more people and 6 more organizations.

  • Jabhat al-Nusra is reported to have executed Fadi Mousa, a senior commander of the Syrian Revolutionaries Front, in the town of Sarmada in Idlib.
    • He was arrested several days ago as he visited his family in the town.

  •  2 commanders and at least 24 fighters from the Islamic State were killed by a government airstrike on an IS convoy near Hamadi Omar in Hama.
    • The IS identified one of the commanders as Deeb Hedijan al-Otaibi, who also went by Abi Ammar al-Jazrawi.

  • There was heavy fighting just north of Aleppo around Handarat Hill and Tel al-Madafehhttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.295066&lon=37.166920&z=13&m=b
    • There was fighting around Bashkuy, Tel al-Madefeh, and Handarat Hill:
    • Rebels captured Tel al-Madefeh, which overlooks the Aleppo Central Prison, and briefly captured Handarat Hill before being pushed back by heavy airstrikes.
    • The village of Bashkuy was hit by rebel shelling.

  • The Islamic State-held city of Jarabulus was hit by rocket shelling from Peshmerga forces stationed on hills across the Euphrates river around Zor Maghar and Nasiriyahhttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.820348&lon=38.046684&z=14&m=b
    • Civilian have largely fled the city, which the IS has declared is a military zone.
    • Several coalition airstrikes hit in the area.
    • Yesterday the IS blew up part of the main bridge, which connects the city with the Shuyoukh district of the Kobani canton, which has now been recaptured by the YPG and FSA.

  • The Islamic State renewed it’s offensive on the town of Tel Tamir and the surrounding villages in al-Hasakahhttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.646110&lon=40.386429&z=12&m=b
    • Fighting was mainly around Tel Shamiram, Kharita, Raqba, Tel Asyan, Tel Maghas, and Tel Nasri.
      • The IS advanced towards Tel Nadri.
    • 2 civilians were killed by mortar shelling on Tel Tamir.
