  • In the last 48 hours, the Islamic State has arrested at least 21 former rebels who had previously turned in their weapons to the group.
  • Jordan hanged Sajida al-Rishawi and Ziad al-Karbouli in retaliation to the Islamic State’s execution of Moath al-Kasaesbeh.
    • Both are Iraqi nationals who were on death row.
      • Rishawi was a failed female suicide bomber whom Jordan was attempting to exchange for Kasaesbeh.
      • Karbouli was an al-Qaeda operative.
    • 5 other prisoners on death row have been transferred to al-Suwaqa prison, where Jordan carries out of most its executions.
    • The Democratic Union Party (PYD) has offered to take revenge on the IS in retaliation for Kasaesbeh’s execution.

    • It was not able to pay salaries last month.
    • The crisis comes as a result of corruption, the awarding of crony jobs, and irresponsible spending.

  • The OPCW reported that on January 31st, the first chemical weapons site in Syria was destroyed.
    • A total of 12 are planned to be destroyed.

  • Yesterday Jen Psaki, the spokesman for the US State Department, said that the US does not recognize the 3 Kurdish cantons in Syria.
