Yesterday I didn’t proofread carefully enough. The figure for the number of airstrikes that I gave for Morek was not just from yesterday, but for the battle as a whole.

  • Fighting around Deir Ez Zor city has continued between the Islamic State and government forces.
    • 3 airstrikes were carried out on Saqer Island as the government continues to try and capture it.
    • The government claimed to have captured the suspension bridge to Saqer Island: http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=35.334943&lon=40.159771&z=16&m=b
    • Government forces in the Industrial Sector

  • Fighting between the Islamic State and the YPG around the city of Kobani has continued.
    • The IS is still bringing in reinforcements from the provinces of Aleppo, ar-Raqqa, al-Hasakah, and Deir Ez Zor.
    • At least 6 coalition airstrikes hit in the eastern and western fronts.
      • US Central Command said that it has conducted more than 135 airstrikes in and around the city this week.
    • The YPG on Tel Shair, which was hit by airstrikes yesterday after it was briefly captured by the IS:
    • A YPG video showing IS fighters killed and weapons and ammo captured:

  • Recep Erdogan, the President of Turkey, said that 200 Peshmerga fighters from Iraq will be travelling through Turkey soon to reinforce Kobani.
    • He also said that the PYD, the political part of which the YPG is the armed wing, has agreed to allow 1,300 FSA fighters to reinforce the city. Salih Muslim, the head of the PYD, contested this and said that talks with the FSA are still ongoing.
    • An official from Kurdistan said that the Peshmerga will be equipped with heavier weapons than what the YPG has been using. The YPG has stressed that they need armor-piercing weapons to combat the tanks and armored vehicles that the IS has been using.
      • Salih Muslim said that unless they get heavy weapons, the fighting will turn into a war of attrition. He said that there are around 40 tanks surrounding the town.

  • The Syrian National Coalition said that supporting the Kurdish forces in Kobani, while ignoring the rebel groups in the rest of Syria, is a mistake which will have negative consequences on the war.
    • “The Syrian crisis needs a radical solution to get rid of the terrorism of both al-Assad and the Islamic State.” They said that the international community needs to fight “all sources of terrorism, and at the top, the Assad regime”.

  • The YPG has refuted a statement made by the Syrian government that said that they were providing logistics and arms to fight the Islamic State in Kobani. They said that they have only received weapons delivered from Iraqi Kurdistan through a US airdrop.

  • The US said that Kobani is at less risk of falling to the Islamic State, but that it is still a possibility if the dynamics on the ground change.

  • 4 people were killed by shelling on Az-Zarzur in Aleppohttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.222534&lon=37.272320&z=14&m=b

    • Lebanon, which has a population of 4 million, has 1.1 million Syrian refugees.
    • Anger at the refugees has been rising due to the strain that the large number has put on the country’s infrastructure, but also because of fighting along the border with Syria in places such as Arsal.
