  • Fighting has continued around Deir Ez Zor city between the SAA and Islamic State as the government continues its push to isolate the IS within the city.
    • At least 3 IS fighters and 7 SAA soldiers died in fighting around the al-Omal, al-Hawiqah, and al-Sina’ah neighborhoods.
      • The IS advanced in parts of the al-Sina’ah neighborhood and the adjacent Industrial Area.
    • 6 airstrikes hit Saqer Island.

    • Coalition airstrikes targeted the IS in the city around the Souq al-Hal market and the Government Square.
    • The IS detonated a car bomb to the east of the city.

    • Yesterday Hisham Abdulla Al Shaalan, a former Major in the Saudi Interior Ministry, was killed while fighting for the IS.

  • 40 Jabhat al-Nusra fighters have defected to the Islamic State and travelled to al-Bab in Aleppo to join them.

  • Rebels destroy a tank with a TOW in fighting around Morek in Hama

  • A deal has been reached to compensate the victims of the vaccines which killed 18 children in Saraqeb in Idlib.
    • LS 2 million will be given to the families of those that were killed. Those who were only injured will also be compensated.
    • No criminal charges were brought as a result. A muscle relaxant that was stored in the same fridge as the vaccines was accidentally used as a diluent.

  • A child and Mahmoud Khaled, who was an ambulance driver for the Syrian Civil Defense, were killed by a airstrikes on Saraqeb in Idlib.


  • IHS, a data and consulting company, published a paper saying that before airstrikes began against the Islamic State, they were producing around $2 million/day worth of crude oil in Iraq and Syria.
    • They were able to produce 50,000-60,000 barrels per day.
    • The IS sells the oil on the black market for between $25-$60/barrel.
    • The airstrikes have focused on IS-controlled oil fields and refineries in an attempt to shut off this source of revenue. It is not clear what their current capacity is.

  • The government has begun a policy of recruiting most males over the age of 18 into the military, regardless of documentation exempting them. This comes as an effort to replace the soldiers who have been killed during the war, and to fill a void left by Iraqi Shia militias who have stopped fighting for the Syrian government in order to return to Iraq to fight the Islamic State.
    • Many of the people being pressed into service are from the Alwaite sect.

  • The UN said that they would offer humanitarian assistance for buffer zones established within Syria, even if they were created without approval of the UN Security Council.
    • The buffer zone has been proposed by Turkey, but is strongly opposed by Syria, Russia, and Iran. Russia has said it would need to be voted on in the Security Council. The US has also resisted the idea, which would require the establishment of a no-fly zone.
    • The buffer zones would protect civilians living within them. In the recent fighting against the Islamic State around Kobani, Turkey was faced with a new influx of almost 200,000 refugees.Turkey currently has around 1.6 million Syrian refugees.

  • Rebels gathering firewood in Qalamoun. There has been heavy fighting between rebels against Hezbollah and the government in Qalamoun recently, in part to try and secure territory and shelter before winter arrives.
