  • Coalition airstrikes in Syria have continued.
    • 3 civilians were killed by coalition airstrikes which were targeting Islamic State-controlled oil fields near the village of Kabiba in al-Hasakah.
    • Airstrikes targeted IS positions in and around Kobani in Aleppo.
    • 5 airstrikes targeted oil fields and refineries in Deir Ez Zor.
    • 12 airstrikes targeted the Tabqa Airbase in al-Raqqa.
    • Prices have risen in and around the city of ar-Raqqa as a result of the airstrikes, which have largely targeted gas fields and IS-controlled infrastructure.
      • Diesel has doubled to LS 150 ($.93)/liter.
      •  Due to power outages, many bakeries have been unable to operate and the price of a loaf of bread is now LS 200 ($1.25).
      • Shopkeepers held strikes, mainly in al-Tabaqa, to protest the increase in prices.
        • The IS has reportedly increased the allotment of electricity to the markets in the town in response to the strike, but power is still out for around 20 hours a day.CentCom 10-17-2014

  • Yesterday the Islamic State captured the Kurdish villages of Khirbet Orta and Girke Kere in al-Hasakah, near the highway linking al-Hasakah city and Qamishli.

  • 4 people from one family, including 2 children, were killed by barrel bombs dropped on Khan al-Sobol in Idlib.

  • A car bomb killed 8 commanders from Harakat Hazm in Idlib yesterday.
    • I have also seen it reported as 8 civilians being killed in an attempt to kill the commanders.
    • The bomb targeted them during a meeting and it looks like it brought down most of the building.
    • Harakat Hazm is an FSA-linked group that has been supplied with US-made TOW missiles.
    • This comes amid a series of assassinations and attempted assasinations of rebel commanders in the province recently, such as on Jabhat al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham.

    • The IS attacked positions that the YPG captured yesterday on the road which runs along the west side of the Security Square.
    • 3 YPG fighters and 8 IS fighters were killed in a YPG attack on the road connecting to Aleppo city in the southwest of Kobani.
    • The IS has continued to shell the city and the Mursitpinar Border Crossing. There was heavy fighting in the northeast of the city as the IS tried to push towards the crossing.

  • The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the Islamic State has 3 jets that it is able to operate.
    • They said activists have seen jets taking off and flying for 5-10 minutes at low altitudes from the Jirah Airbase in Aleppohttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.097661&lon=37.942829&z=14&m=b
    • Former officers of the dissolved Iraqi Army are said to be conducting the training of pilots.
      • The IS has a heavy presence in their top ranks of former officers from Iraq’s military, which was dissolved after the US invasion.
    • The jets would have been captured from the Syrian military after the IS over-ran their bases in Aleppo and al-Raqqa.
    • US Central Command said they were not aware of any flights by the IS.

  • The Islamic State executed Abdullah al-Bushi, a 17 year-old media activist, in al-Bab in Aleppo.
    • He was executed on charges of filming an IS HQ in al-Bab for 500 Turkish Lira.

    • Government forces are trying to cut-off IS forces in Deir Ez Zor city. Last month the government blew up the suspension bridge that was used by the IS as a supply route into the city.

  • Rebels have announced the start of the Ahlo al-Azem offensive, which will try to capture the Umm al-Mayadin Checkpoint, the al-Ma’esra Checkpoint, and the al-Kazeyyat Checkpoint in Daraahttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=32.580161&lon=36.206818&z=14&m=b
    • The checkpoints are the biggest in the area and lie on the Daraa-Damascus Highway.
    • The checkpoints are around 6 km from Daraa city and 4 km from the Naseeb Border Crossing with Jordan.
      • The border crossing was closed in response to the fighting and received reinforcements from the Syrian military.
    • Rebels captured the Umm al-Mayadin checkpoint, but retreated after at least 7 airstrikes targeted them.

  • Medicine was delivered for the first time to the Yarmouk Refugee Camp in Damascus, which has been under siege since July 2013, by the International Red Cross.
    • The supplies included things to help women deliver babies more safely and hygienically, and medicine to treat chronic diseases like heart disease for 5,000 people for 3 months.
    • The Syrian government has allowed very little food and aid into the camp, where around 130 people have starved to death.
