  • The Syrian National Coalition has dissolved the Supreme Military Council, which contains the leadership of the Free Syrian Army, on the grounds that it does not represent all of the opposition forces.
    • Hadi al-Bahra, the leader of the SNC, said that this is part of an effort to further unite the different rebel groups in Syria and consolidate arrangements such as FSA cooperation with other coalitions like the Islamic Front. He also said that several members of the SMC had been removed due to disagreements.

  • The government has continued its new offensive on Adra as it attempts to weaken rebels in Eastern Ghouta.

  • Zahran Alloush, the head of Jaish al-Islam and the Islamic Front, said that yesterday a group of armed men in Douma had killed Bashir al-Ajwa, the spokesman and senior commander of the Osoud al-Ghouta Brigade.
    • Zahran called for an investigation into the killing to be opened.

  • The YPG has halted the Islamic State’s advance on Kobani in Aleppo , with the IS making no significant gains in the last day.
    • The IS has captured around 130 villages in the area over the last few days.
    • There have been reports that the IS is executing civilians in the villages that it has captured.
    • The IS offensive has seen them bring in tanks, and US-made heavy artillery and armored vehicles that they captured from the Iraqi army.

  • Yesterday and today the Turkish Military fired on protesters near the Syrian border who began throwing rocks after the military prevented them from approaching the border.
    • Hundreds of Kurdish volunteers from Turkey and Iraq have crossed the border to help the YPG in the fighting.
    • The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a Kurdish group in Turkey, called on Kurdish citizens of Turkey to cross the border and help the YPG.
      • Dursun Kalkan, the leader of the PKK, accused the Turkish government of collaborating with the IS.

  • Turkey announced that 130,000 refugees have crossed the border since Friday, after advances by the Islamic State on the area surrounding the Kurdish city of Kobani in Aleppo.
    • Refugees have crossed through a 30 km section along the border, but the UN said that only 2 of the 9 crosses are currently open. The Turkish government said that this is for better organization of the refugees.

  • Yesterday, members of the Syrian Civil Defense in Aleppo staged a sit-in to protest the Interim Government’s delay of their salaries.
    • The SCD are first responders who conduct rescue operations in areas hit by shelling and bombing. They are also often targeted by government airstrikes, which will conduct a second run 15-20 minutes after an initial one in order to hit people who have arrived on the scene.srycivdef 9-22-2014

  • The Foreign Ministry denied that it has used chemical weapons in the war, and said that claims that it has are being made because the government is advancing in Rif Dimashq and Hama. It accused rebels of being behind any chemical weapon attacks, saying that those who are conspiring against the government “might provide chemical weapons to terrorist organizations to be used against the Syrian people and frame the Syrian Arab Army for the attacks”.
    • The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons concluded that chlorine gas has been used in attacks on three towns in Hama, which killed 20 people and wounded hundreds.
    • Last week John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, publicly accused the government of using chemical weapons.

  • Hope Plant, an NGO that works in refugee camps, said that 2,000 families have fled Hama to refugee camps on the Turkish border, after 2 months of heavy fighting between rebels and government forces in the province.

  • Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for an attack Saturday on a Hezbollah checkpoint in the Lebanese village of Khreibeh, which is near the Syrian border.

  • The Lebanese Armed Forces have begun attacking the outskirts of Arsal, a town which houses many Syrian refugees and rebels, and which saw heavy fighting last month between gunmen and the LAF.

  • Jordan has arrested 11 people who it says have been smuggling weapons and equipment in from Syrian in order to carry out an al-Qaeda-linked plot to bomb shopping centers and assassinate western diplomats.

  • Colonel Riad al-Assad, the founder of the Free Syrian Army, warned that US airstrikes against the Islamic State within Syria will strengthen Assad and bring about the defeat of the rebels. He also warned against strengthening the role of Assad’s ally, Iran, in the war by bringing them in to the anti-IS coalition.
