  • Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for the PYD, said that the Islamic State has taken up to 20 towns and villages to the south and west of the Kurdish city of Kobani in Aleppo, and that civilians are being evacuated from the area.
    • A YPG commander said that they are out of ammo and need urgent assistance. The IS have brought in a large number of tanks and pieces of heavy artillery as they have escalated the fighting this week.
    • Between 7,000 and 10,000 civilians have been displaced over the past few days of fighting. Many have fled to the border with Turkey, but the Turkish military has only let a small number of them cross the border.

  • An attack with helicopters on the Islamic State-controlled city of al-Bab in Aleppo killed between 26 and 51 people after a barrel bomb was dropped on a bakery, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees.al-bab 9-18-2014

  • There are conflicting reports over whether rebels captured either part or all of the al-Dukhaniyya neighborhood of Damascus. Rebels said 16 soldiers were killed in the fighting.

  • The Islamic State released a video showing John Cantlie, a British journalist who was kidnapped as he crossed from Turkey into Syria in July 2012.
    • The video was not of his execution, but shows him saying that he will “convey some facts” about the IS in a series of videos.



  • 2 children were killed and 6 people were injured by airstrikes on Maarat al-Nu’man in Idlib.

  • Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Iranian Foreign Minister, blamed the US for the rise of the Islamic State and said that the Assad government is what has kept the group from taking over Syria.
    • He denied that there had been an informal non-aggression agreement between the IS and the Syrian government until June:  “No Government would create an organization like ISIS that would engage in such a brutal, savage campaign.”

  • Bashar al-Jaafari, the Syrian ambassador to the UN, condemned the UN’s withdrawal of Peacekeepers from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights border with Israel, saying that the decision was the result of plotting by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, and Israel to coordinate with Jabhat al-Nusra.
    • Earlier, JaN took 45 peacekeepers prisoner and had surrounded over 70 on the Syrian side of the border. The UN said the decision to pull all of their peacekeepers out of the Syrian side was due to the fighting between rebels and the Syrian government in the area that has created a deteriorating security condition.


  • Government forces recaptured Tal Malah in Hama. The town has changed hands 3 times in the last 3 days as the government has pushed back rebels. including a large presence from Jabhat al-Nusra, from the area.

  • Government forces re-captured al-Zilaqiat in Hama from rebels, who had captured it yesterday after government forces had captured it the day before, but rebels then re-captured the town a few hours later.
  • Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Turkish Foreign Minister, called for a greater sharing of intelligence information between countries in order to stop Jihadists from entering Turkey and travelling over the border to join the Islamic State.
    • Many of the foreign fighters who have joined the IS have done so by flying into Turkey and then arranging passage across the borders with Iraq and Syria.

  • John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, accused Assad of breaking the Chemical Weapons Convention by using chlorine gas in attacks this year.

  • France said that it will not carry out airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria, but will in Iraq.

Zaman Alwsl reported that Syrian rebels have arrested Muzojek Mezdi, a Russian Intelligence Officer, and are willing to swap him for rebels currently being held in government prisons.


  • 4 rebels were killed during fighting in which they captured Deir al-Adas from government forces in Daraa.
  • Jabhat al-Nusra exchanged 2 women held by the government for a captured soldier and the body of a soldier in Nahitah in Daraa.

  • 5 people, including 2 children, were killed by airstrikes on a school in the town of al-Sha’fa in Deir Ez Zor.

  • Islamic State fighters were kidnapped by unknown gunmen around al-Masa’id in Deir Ez Zor.

  • A video from the Gweiran neighborhood of al-Hasakah city, which was captured from pro-Islamic State militia 2 days ago by the SAA, YPG, and NDF after negotiations with local village elders:
