• The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that it has documented 2,782 civilians who have died from airstrikes on Aleppo since the beginning of the year.

        • He was the Emir of Ahrar of rural eastern Aleppo-Maskaneh in late 2013 when the group had its initial confrontations with the Islamic State.
      • Abu Saleh Tahan has been appointed as the Deputy Head.
    • Doctors have said that most of the casualties died from smoke inhalation. The meeting was being held in an underground room.
    • The attack has still not been claimed by any group.

  • The SAA captured the village of Btyash and the al-Tarabia checkpoint, south of Helfaia. Rebels origionally captured the checkpoint on July 29th.
  • The YPG and FSA in northern Syria have established a Joint Operations room called Borkan al-Furat in order to fight the Islamic State in al-Raqqa, Jarablos, Sarrin, Manbij, and the Qarah Qozaq area.

  • The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has concluded that chemical weapons were used “systematically and repeatedly” on rebel-held Talmanes, Kafr Zita, and al-Tamanes in Idlib and Hama.
    • They did not blame either side, but said that witnesses generally attributed them to barrel bombs dropped from helicopters.
    • It concluded that chlorine was most likely the chemical that was used:  “The descriptions, physical properties, behaviour of the gas, and signs and symptoms resulting from exposure, as well as the response of patients to the treatment, leads the FFM to conclude with a high degree of confidence that chlorine, either pure or in mixture, is the toxic chemical in question.”
    • The attacks killed 20 people and injured hundreds. They were made as the government was trying to stop rebels from threatening the main highway from Hama to Idlib and Aleppo.

  • The Syrian National Coalition announced that it has begun diplomatic training courses to prepare politicians and diplomats for working at an international level and for leadership roles within the country in “the post-Assad phase”.
    • The training began in the Netherlands on September 7th.

  • The UN General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon, urged Assad to seek a political solution to resolve the civil war, saying this would help international efforts to combat the Islamic State.

  • Government forces in Qalamoun have begun to withdraw from some areas in order to reinforce areas around Damascus that are under threat from the Southern Fronts offensive in Quneitra.
    • Most of Qalamoun was recaptured by government forces earlier this year after Hezbollah was brought in to reinforce them.

  • Barack Obama made a speech saying that he is increasing his support for rebel groups within Syria to combat the Islamic State and called on congress to increase resources available to train and equip Syrian rebels. He also said that the US will not hesitate to attack the IS in Syria.
