  • The Islamic State executed and crucified a man in the town of al-Ashara in Deir Ez Zor for apostasy and infidelity.
    • The IS is carrying out a campaign of arrests in the town due to civilian protests against them. Yesterday civilians protested in front of an IS HQ in the town, which was hit by an airstrike that killed 8 civilians. The protesters are upset that the IS sets up HQs within civilian-populated areas.al-ashara 9-5-2014

  • The Islamic State closed all of the roads to the SAA-controlled neighborhoods of al-Qussour and al-Jura in Deir Ez Zor city, as well as the Deir Ez Zor-Damascus road, most likely in preparation for an assault on the Deir Ez Zor Military Airport which is also in the city.

    • At least 21 rebels have been killed in the offensive so far.

  • The World Health Organization and Syrian Arab Red Crescent delivered 7,000 vaccines, some of which are for polio, to the Damascus suburb of Mouadamiyah. Another 7,000 vaccines will be shipped to Eastern Ghouta in the near future.

  • A delegation from Qatar reportedly met with Jabhat al-Nusra in Qalamoun for 5 hours to negotiate for the captured Lebanese police and soldiers who are being held by them.

  • Tensions between Syrian refugees living in Turkey and Turkish citizens are continuing to rise.
    • It has been reported that police in some areas have verbal instructions to remove refugees from their houses if complaints against them are made, whether or not the complaints can be substantiated. Any money paid for rent cannot be recovered by the refugees, even money that has been paid in advance, since the removal is not classified as an eviction.
    • Many Turkish citizens believe that the government pays the rents for the refugees and gives them a monthly salary, although this is not true. However, refugees are willing to work for much lower prices than Turkish citizens, which causes further resentment.

  • Uruguay has offered full resettlement to 120 Syrian refugees that it is taking in from refugee camps in Lebanon.
    • Priority for the selection of who will be brought to Uruguay is being given to orphans who can bring at least one relative who can work in the country’s fishing and agricultural sectors.
