  • The Islamic State has advanced within 2-3 km on the eastern front of Kobani in Aleppo, which has been facing a heavy offensive by the group since the 16th.

    • The IS beheaded 5 captured YPG fighters, 3 of whom were women, and 4 FSA fighters and displayed their heads in Jarablus, about 28 km west of Kobani.

  • Turkey announced that the Islamic State has surrounded the Tomb of Suleyman Shah, which is in Aleppo and about 37 km from the border. Turkey regards it as sovereign territory and the military has had a presence at the tomb throughout the civil war. There are currently 36 soldiers stationed there.

    • The IS has been close to the tomb since it took over the area. Turkey has recently discussed creating a “buffer zone” on the Syrian side of the Turkish border, which would be protected by the Turkish military.  Yesterday Turkey moved tanks to the border after mortar shells landed in Turkey in the fighting around Kobani. There has been speculation that the tomb may be used as a pretext for Turkey to move into Syria and establish the buffer zone.

  • The Iraqi Peshmerga, YPG and members of the northwestern Iraqi Shammar Tribe captured the village of Rabbia from the Islamic State, which lies on the Syria-Iraq border at the Yarubiyah border crossing in al-Hasakahhttp://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=36.805093&lon=42.085619&z=14&m=b
    • At least 12 IS members died in the battle.
    • The IS has captured 11 villages surrounding Yarubiyah from the YPG over the last few days, reportedly killing up to 76 YPG fighters.

  • Rebels repelled an attack on Tel al-Sawwan in Eastern Ghouta which is next to the Adra Industrial Area that the government captured a few days ago.

  • The Islamic State ended up executing 4 of its members in al-Bukumal in Deir Ez Zor yesterday, it was initially reported as 2.
    • 1 was executed for embezzlement, 1 for banditry, and 2 were executed for spying.

  • The Stop Islamization of America, a far-right American group, has agreed at the request of James Foley’s family, to pull an anti-Islam ad that featured Foley in the moments before he was beheaded by the Islamic State.
    • The ad identifies British rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary as the executioner, although the true identity is not known to the public.
