  • The Islamic State executed Dr. Rua Thiab, a dentist, for treating men. She was executed in al-Mayadin in Deir Ez Zor province. 
    • She originally disappeared from her clinic in al-Mayadin 10 days ago with 4 of her colleagues. Their fate is still unknown.

  • 1 person was killed and 17 were injured by shelling on the al-Khaldeyyi neighborhood of Aleppo. 

  • The YPG and FSA are attacking the Islamic State in Sarrin, in east Aleppo. 
  • The Islamic Front has issued a 3-day deadline for Jaish Muhammad to withdraw from Azaz in Aleppo province due to its alleged affiliations with the Islamic State. 

  • Fighting has intensified again around the government-held al-Taqba Airbase in al-Raqqa province.
    • The Islamic State launched an assault which included suicide car bombs. It is unclear who is winning right now. At least one of the suicide bombers was able to blow himself up next to the wall surrounding the airport, and right now both sides are shelling eachother with tanks and artillery.
    • Government forces launched 3 scud rockets to the area west of the airport.
    • Airstrikes were launched against the adjacent city of al-Tabaqa.

  • The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a meeting with Syrian tribal leaders that the only way to reach a solution in Syria is through diplomatic and political dialogue, and that the fighting is only bolstering the Islamic State.

  • The mother of James Foley, the American journalist executed by the Islamic State in a video yesterday called A Message to America, has asked the “kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages”.
    • The IS threatened to continue executing prisoners until the US stops conducting airstrikes against it.
    • The also said that she has “never been prouder of our son Jim” who gave “his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people.” He was originally kidnapped while covering the war in November 2012.

  • Algerian police arrested 160 Syrians, including women and children, on charges of having relations with “terrorist” organizations and preparing to execute attacks in Europe.
    • An-Nahar, an Algerian newspaper, said that they were in transit to Libya with mobile phones, GPS devices, and $125,000.
    • They were reportedly going to get help from an Algerian relative to get to Libya, where they would then be moved to France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, where someone would receive them under the guise of refugees.

  • Gerd Meuller, the German Development Aid Minister, accused Qatar of financing the Islamic State.

  • The Syrian Civil Defense said that its members have had 25 deaths and 50 injuries so far in the war, meaning around 1 in 7 of the volunteers have been a casualty.

  • Government forces have begun to move equipment from the Hama Military Airport, which rebels are now about 3 km away from.

  • The FSA claimed to have destroyed a jet with Grad rockets at the Hama Military Airport. 

  • Rebels captured the town of Um Khareeza, east of Hama city.
    • An alliance consisting of groups led by Harakat Hazm, Jabhat al-Nusra, and Arhrar al-Sham also captured territory around the town of Qahamne, north of Hama city and on the airport road.

  • Jabhat al-Nusra ambushed a government convoy near Hayaleen in Hama and claimed that they killed 30 soldiers.

  • It has been revealed the US Special Forces staged a failed attempt to rescue US hostages in Syria over the summer, including James Foley. 
    • The hostages were not at the location and 1 of the dozen special forces members was injured.
    • Exactly what units were involved, and where the operation took place, hasn’t been revealed.
