  • 8 people, including 3 children and 2 women, were killed by government shelling on Ma’erzaf in Hama province.

  • The merger between Jaish al-Islam and Suquor al-Sham to form the Islamic Front, which will be a single group rather than a coalition, has Ahmed Issa as the leader, Hassan Abboud as the political chief, and Zahran Alloush as the military chief.

  • Rebels claimed to have shot down a jet in Qalamoun in western Syria.

  • The towns in Deir Ez Zor where the Shietat tribe has kicked out the Islamic State now include al-Sh’etat, al-Ashara, Mayadin, Suwaydan, and al-Shweyt.
    • A parade held by tribesmen celebrating the IS’ expulsion: 
    • Some IS members reportedly defected from the al-Omar Oilfield.
    • A convoy of IS vehicles was reported to be moving from Iraq to retake the areas.
    • The fighting began 3 days ago, after the IS violated an agreement  saying that the tribe would not oppose the IS if they were not harassed, and arrested 3 tribesmen. al-sheatat 8-1-2014

  • There was heavy fighting in Aleppo city around the military academy and the al-Hekma school in the al-Hamdania neighborhood.

  • A TOW missile fired in Sheikh Najjar: 

  • Fighting occurred between the YPG and IS in Kobani.

  • The government conducted airstrikes on the IS-held Omar Oilfield and fired on the Zahdi Oilfield, which is a part of the Omar field, with heavy machine guns.

  • Bab al-Hawa said that Turkish authorities will allow Syrian citizens who have official documents from the Turkish government, incuding refugee papers, to cross over to Syria for the next week. The crossings include all Syria-Turkey border crossings in Aleppo, al-Raqqa, and Idlib. The only ones that will not be allowed are where there are blanket bans on civilians crossing, which are in Kurdish areas.

  • Yaqoub al-Omar, a Jabhat al-Nusra judge, was assassinated in his home in Khan al-Subul in Idlib province. yaqoub al-Omar 8-1-2014

  • A barrel bomb dropped in Daraa: 

  • Hadi al-Bahra, the president of the Syrian National Coalition, visited the camp near Antakya in Turkey for defected officers. He also visited the residence within the camp of Colonel Riad al-Assad, the founder and leader of the FSA. This is the beginning of an effort that Bahra is making in order to strengthen the relationship between the political and military wings of the SNC.
