  • Assad was declared the winner of the election with 10,319,723 votes, or 88.7%.

  • The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 130 mortar shells hit Damascus yesterday during voting, killing 3 people and injuring more than 15.

  • Activists said that a reporter for the Chinese news agency, Xinhua news, died after being hit by celebratory gunfire in Damascus.
      • Dozens of people across Damascus were injured, including an 8 year-old boy.

  • Lama Rahawanji, the owner of a fashion gallery in Damascus, voted for people who sent her photos of their ID cards yesterday, even though the law requires a voter to show up in person to vote.
      • She had originally posted on her Facebook asking people who hadn’t voted to send her a photo of their ID so she could vote for them, and published photographs showing her voting for them. However she deleted the images when she realized that opposition activists were spreading the images.

  • Kurdish militias associated with the Kurdish Democratic Union (PYD) closed more than 20 voting stations yesterday and attacked workers at 6 of the poling stations in al-Hasaka province.
        •  The ISIL stopped all citizens from villages south of al-Hasaka from entering the city and closed all roads under their control.

  • The Syrian government will free 300 prisoners from Aleppo Central Prison.
        • 20 of the people being released originally fought alongside government forces in the vicinity of the prison, but were then imprisoned for moral or criminal crimes.

  • 18 people were killed and 80 injured in Douma from government rocket attacks from ground forces and air strikes.


  • Robert Ford, the former US ambassador to Syria, criticized Obama’s policy on Syria in an interview with PBS NewsHour, saying that Washington should have done more earlier to arm moderate rebel groups. He also said that he had left his post in February because he could “no longer defend the policy in public”.
  • Mohammad al-Karam, a Lebanese reporter attached to a Hezbollah unit, was killed in al-Mleha.
  • Jahbat al-Nusra and Islamic Battalions recaptured the two villages of Abo Al Nitel and Al Nmayla that they lost yesterday from the ISIL in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez Zor.
